BMLT Course: What Lab Technologists Do and How to Get Admission

· 2 min read

When a doctor orders a blood test, a urine test or a culture, the result comes from a medical laboratory. The people who collect, process and analyse those samples are medical laboratory technologists. The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT, also called B.Sc MLT) is the degree that prepares you for this work.

What does a lab technologist do?

It is careful, detail-oriented work. A small mistake in labelling or calibration can change a diagnosis, which is why good laboratories value trained staff.

Who can apply?

Most universities ask for Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (some also accept Mathematics), with a minimum percentage set by the university. Some states and universities admit through an entrance test or counselling; others admit on merit. Always read the current admission notice of the university.

How long is the course?

BMLT is usually a three-year degree, and many universities add a period of practical training or internship in a hospital laboratory. The exact structure depends on the university.

Where do BMLT graduates work?

Hospital and clinic laboratories, diagnostic chains, blood banks, research laboratories and public health programmes. With experience, technologists move into supervisory and quality roles, or study further (M.Sc MLT and related programmes).

Check the college before you pay

BMLT is awarded by a university, so first confirm that the university is recognised on the UGC website and that the course is part of its approved programmes. Visit the laboratory if you can: practical training decides how job-ready you will be. Our guide How to check if a college is approved walks you through the checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMLT a good option if I do not get an MBBS seat?

It is a respected health-science career on its own, not only a back-up. Choose it if you enjoy laboratory work and accuracy.

Is NEET required for BMLT?

Rules differ by state and university. Some use NEET scores or their own test; many admit on Class 12 marks. Check the official notice.

See the course details on our BMLT page, or book a counselling session to compare colleges with a counsellor.
