Low NEET Score? Realistic Medical and Health Science Options
Every year many hard-working students do not get an MBBS seat. That result is disappointing, but it does not close the door to a healthcare career. India needs nurses, therapists, technologists and pharmacists as much as it needs doctors. Here are the main options, with the honest questions to ask about each.
Option 1: AYUSH degrees (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS)
Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Unani degrees also admit through NEET, usually at different score levels from MBBS. They lead to registration as a practitioner of that system. Choose them only if you are genuinely interested in that system of medicine. See our comparison of AYUSH courses.
Option 2: Nursing (B.Sc Nursing, GNM)
Nursing is one of the most needed professions in India and abroad. Some states admit to B.Sc Nursing through NEET or their own entrance test; others on merit. The course and the college must be approved by the Indian Nursing Council. Read GNM vs B.Sc Nursing vs ANM.
Option 3: Physiotherapy and allied health
BPT (physiotherapy), BMLT (laboratory), B.Sc Radiology and Imaging, Optometry, Occupational Therapy and Cardiac Care Technology are degree courses with steady demand in hospitals and clinics. Most admit on Class 12 marks or a state test.
Option 4: Pharmacy
D.Pharm, B.Pharm and Pharm.D lead to work in hospitals, community pharmacies, industry and research. Check that the institution is approved by the Pharmacy Council of India.
Option 5: MBBS abroad
Studying medicine abroad is possible only if you have qualified NEET and the university and course meet the National Medical Commission's rules. It is a big decision for the whole family: read the NMC rules for MBBS abroad before talking to any agent.
Option 6: Prepare and try again
If MBBS is the only career you want, another attempt is a valid choice. Be honest about what went wrong this year, and plan the next year with a clear timetable.
How to choose
- What daily work will I do in this career, and do I like it?
- Is the college and the course approved by the right council?
- What practical training (hospital, lab) does the college provide?
- What are the total costs, from the official fee notice only?
