MBBS Abroad: NMC Rules to Check Before You Choose a University
Thousands of Indian students study MBBS abroad every year. The ones who return smoothly have one thing in common: they checked the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules before choosing a university. The rules below come from the NMC regulations for foreign medical graduates. Always confirm the current version on the NMC website, because the Commission can issue new notices.
1. Qualify NEET-UG first
Indian students who want to practise in India after studying medicine abroad must qualify NEET-UG. Without it, the foreign degree will not lead to registration in India.
2. Course length and internship
Under the NMC regulations for foreign medical graduates, the course should be at least 54 months long, followed by an internship of at least 12 months at the same foreign institution. Shorter courses do not qualify.
3. Medium of teaching: English
The whole course should be taught in English. Many universities teach the local language too, which helps with patients during clinical training, but the medium of instruction must be English.
4. Same university for the whole course
The regulations expect the entire course, training and internship at the same foreign institution. Plan to finish where you start.
5. Licence in that country
You should become eligible for a licence to practise medicine in the country where you study, on the same terms as that country's own graduates. Ask the university for this in writing.
6. After you return
Foreign medical graduates complete a supervised internship in India and pass the licensing examination set by NMC before they are registered. Check the current exam and internship rules on the NMC website.

Frequently asked questions
Can someone guarantee my registration in India?
No. Registration depends on meeting the NMC conditions and passing the licensing exam. Be careful of anyone who promises it.
Is MBBS abroad cheaper than in India?
It can be cheaper than private medical colleges in India, but costs vary widely by country and university. Compare the full cost for all years, in writing.
