B.Pharm vs D.Pharm vs Pharm.D: Differences Explained
Pharmacy offers steady careers in hospitals, retail, manufacturing, research and regulation. Students with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics in Class 12 usually choose between three courses: D.Pharm, B.Pharm and Pharm.D. Every pharmacy course must be run by an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for that course and year.
D.Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy)
A two-year diploma followed by practical training. It is the minimum qualification to register as a pharmacist with a State Pharmacy Council, which is needed to run or work in a chemist shop. It suits students who want to start working early or open a pharmacy. Read about D.Pharm.
B.Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy)
A four-year degree covering pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacognosy. It opens jobs in drug manufacturing, quality control, sales and marketing, regulatory affairs and research, and leads to M.Pharm and MBA options. D.Pharm holders can often join B.Pharm directly in the second year through lateral entry. Read about B.Pharm.
Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy)
A six-year programme (five years of study plus a year of internship or residency) with a strong clinical focus: working with doctors on patient medication, hospital and clinical pharmacy, drug safety and clinical research. B.Pharm graduates can join a shorter post-baccalaureate Pharm.D. Read about Pharm.D.
