Online BA: duration, eligibility and how to choose a university
An Online BA is a undergraduate degree that you study over the internet from a university, without moving to its campus. It suits students who want a flexible humanities degree, often alongside competitive exam preparation.
Duration and eligibility
- Duration: usually 3 years (6 semesters). Each university also sets a maximum period to finish the course; check it before you apply.
- Eligibility: Class 12 pass in any stream from a recognised board. The exact rule is in the university's admission notice.
Common specialisations
Universities choose their own list. Common options include:
- English
- Economics
- History
- Political science
- Sociology
How classes and exams work
Study material, recorded lectures and live sessions are given through the university's learning portal. Exams are held online with proctoring or at exam centres, depending on the university. Ask how assignments, projects and exams are conducted before you pay.
Is an online degree valid?
Under the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations for online and distance programmes, a degree from a university that is entitled by UGC to offer that programme in online mode is treated like the same degree earned on campus. Entitlement is given programme by programme and session by session, so check that this programme is listed for your admission session on the UGC Distance Education Bureau website (deb.ugc.ac.in) before paying any fee.
Be careful of offers such as "degree in one sitting", back-dated admission or a guaranteed result: these are not allowed.
Fees
Fees differ a lot between universities and change every session. Compare the total fee for the whole course, including exam and registration charges, from the university's own fee page.
How we help
Our counsellors compare UGC-entitled universities for your goals and budget, check the current fee and entitlement with you, and help with the application. Counselling is a professional, paid service, and we never promise admission.
