GNM vs B.Sc Nursing vs ANM: Which Nursing Course Should You Choose?
Nursing is one of the most dependable careers in health care, in India and abroad. There are three main entry routes: ANM, GNM and B.Sc Nursing. All nursing programmes must be run by institutions recognised by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the State Nursing Council. Eligibility rules and course structures are set by INC and can change, so always check the current INC notice before applying.
ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery)
A diploma focused on community health, mother and child care, immunisation and basic nursing. It is the shortest route and suits students who want to start working early, especially in community and rural health services. Read about ANM.
GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery)
A diploma that trains you as a general nurse for hospitals, covering medical-surgical nursing, midwifery, child health and mental health nursing, with clinical training. GNM nurses can later do the two-year Post Basic B.Sc Nursing to earn a degree. Read about GNM.
B.Sc Nursing
A four-year degree with deeper science, clinical practice and leadership training. It opens the widest range of roles: staff nurse, nursing tutor after experience, M.Sc Nursing, and many opportunities abroad that ask for a nursing degree. Admission usually needs Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, and many states hold an entrance test. Read about B.Sc Nursing.

| ANM | GNM | B.Sc Nursing | |
|---|---|---|---|

How to decide
- If you have PCB in Class 12 and can study four years, B.Sc Nursing gives the most options.
- If you want a hospital job sooner and a degree later, GNM followed by Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is a proven path.
- If you want to work in community health close to home, ANM is a good start.
Before you take admission
- Check the college on the INC website and with the State Nursing Council, for the current year.
- Ask which hospital is attached for clinical training.
- Get the full fee structure in writing.
